چکیده

Abstract El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) diversity has a significant impact on global climate and seasonal prediction. However, it is still challenging problem for present-day models to simulate different types of ENSO events with realistic features simultaneously. In this paper, tropical stochastic skeleton model the interactions among wind bursts Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO), Niño, Walker circulation developed reproduce both dynamical statistical diversity. model, intraseasonal component state-dependent noise captures general MJO, which play important roles in triggering Niño. The thermocline feedback dominant mechanism generating eastern Pacific (EP) while nonlinear zonal advection incorporated into that contributes central (CP) Besides, simple but effective process describing multidecadal variation background modulates spatial patterns occurrence frequency EP CP This succeeds simulating quasi-regular moderate super Niño as well La Niña It also observed non-Gaussian characteristics sea surface temperature anomalies regions. Individual case studies highlight outstanding skill reproducing episodes their underlying mechanisms.

A Stochastic Skeleton Model for the MJO

The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is the dominant mode of variability in the tropical atmosphere on intraseasonal time scales and planetary spatial scales. Despite the primary importance of the MJO and the decades of research progress since its original discovery, a generally accepted theory for its essential mechanisms has remained elusive. In recent work by two of the authors, a minimal dyn...

Simple stochastic model for El Niño with westerly wind bursts.

Atmospheric wind bursts in the tropics play a key role in the dynamics of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). A simple modeling framework is proposed that summarizes this relationship and captures major features of the observational record while remaining physically consistent and amenable to detailed analysis. Within this simple framework, wind burst activity evolves according to a stocha...

Interactive Feedback between the Tropical Pacific Decadal Oscillation and ENSO in a Coupled General Circulation Model

The output from a coupled general circulationmodel (CGCM) is used to develop evidence showing that the tropical Pacific decadal oscillation can be driven by an interaction between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the slowly varyingmean background climate state. The analysis verifies that the decadal changes in themean states are attributed largely to decadal changes in ENSO statistic...

Simple stochastic dynamical models capturing the statistical diversity of El Niño Southern Oscillation.

The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has significant impact on global climate and seasonal prediction. A simple modeling framework is developed here that automatically captures the statistical diversity of ENSO. First, a stochastic parameterization of the wind bursts including both westerly and easterly winds is coupled to a simple ocean-atmosphere model that is otherwise deterministic, line...
